They Also Served, by Peter Chadwick.
Privately published 2023 by Broughton District History Group. Hard Back 594pp. ISBN 978-1-3999-6061-8

On 7 October 2023, BDHG were pleased to launch the brand new publication, They Also Served. The book was researched and compiled by Peter Chadwick, with initial research by Phil Coops, Mike Grose and Robert Webb.

They Also Served  lists and identifies the servicemen and women of the Broughton, Brymbo and Gwersyllt areas of Wrexham, North Wales who had, in any way, contributed to service in connection with the Great War 1914 – 1918, whether they died in service or not.

It lists and identifies most of the names which appear on the local War Memorials for the areas concerned, just a few have defied research. The entries in the books ‘Broughton at War’ and ‘Brymbo Remembers’, which are now out of print, have been updated here with some corrections, additional information and names.

They Also Served  also lists many connected with the areas, but who for whatever reason, were not included on the War Memorials even though they had died because of the war.

Also listed and of equal importance, are several hundred names of those who served their country during the war, whether ‘on active service’ or in ‘protected occupations’ and who survived the war, returning home to normal life after hostilities had ended. In addition, there are several names of those who served in the military prior to the Great War. Some of these served places such as South Africa, China and India. There are nearly 2000 names listed, many of which have narratives of various lengths and many with photographs.

Although mention is sometimes made of battles engaged in, the object of the book is not so much the military engagements, rather than to simply identify and remember those who have long since been forgotten. A valuable local history resource.

Monumental Inscriptions

Recording gravestone inscriptions in local cemeteries and burial grounds

Our dedicated MI team has transcribed and recorded gravestones and memorials in various cemeteries and burial grounds in the Broughton District. The work involves onsite visits, manual recording, digital recording, mapping grave plots and publishing reference materials.

The most recent site nearing completion is St Paul’s Churchyard, Pentre Broughton. Transcriptions are almost complete and the project is now entering the digitising and publishing phase.

Oral Histories

Capturing reminiscences from members of our community to record life in days gone by

The oral history team has undertaken training to learn how to use recording equipment and employ the best interview techniques to capture the reminiscences of our community members.

The recordings are being transcribed and digitised so that we can make them available to anyone with an interest in life in Broughton in days gone by.

We are always on the lookout for volunteers who would like to chat with us and allow us to digitally preserve their words and memories. Please contact us if you can help us to build up this invaluable resource for future generations.
